It’s curious, but there appears to be a sudden love springing up for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The first hint of this was in R. Stacy McCain’s systematic fisking of evangelical activist David Lane’s mad theory on why Gingrich didn’t overtake Santorum in the primaries. (Hint: It’s Karl Rove’s fault.)
There’s no proper way to excerpt the blog. So read the whole thing.
Now there’s this: a usually-sensible Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) nominates Newt for Speaker to replace John Boehner. (For Mr. Lane’s elucidation, I seem to recall Gohmert supporting Rick Santorum during the primary season.)
And where’s our favorite, zoo-visiting historian in all this? He’s checkin’ out fossils at the University of Texas. Of course. An apt visual metaphor, if ever there was one. God bless him.
EDIT.1: Thanks for the link love, R. Stacy McCain.
I just got one thing to say to this:
(Last verse from Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel; tweaked to fit this situation)
Where have you gone, Newt Gingrich
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you (Woo, woo, woo)
What’s that you say, Mrs. Robinson
Mr. Newt has left and gone away
(Hey, hey, hey…hey, hey, hey)

I appreciate this, Rick, especially since you rooted for Newt.
